One of three parts of Wayfinding, orientation refers to locating your position – literally or metaphorically. To locate your position, literally, is to match your current location on the earth and on a map. When you stand in front of a mall map and find the “you are here” red dot – and when you confirm the stores around the dot are the same stores around you – you’ve oriented yourself to the mall map. To locate your position metaphorically, at work, is to be aware of your maps and models as they operate, and to validate what they tells you against information from the situation. You can orient yourself to colleagues the same way.
