Juxtaposed to collaboration, conflict is contested interdependence, or working against. If someone is working against you so that they would prevail – they would win, you would lose – that’s a conflict. While this covers most situations, others require a nuanced application of the definition. If your rights are violated, contesting the interdependence is warranted and could be sanctioned. If organizational norms are violated – perhaps a grayer area compared to employee rights – contesting the interdependence might be warranted, sanctioned, both, or neither.
