One of three parts of Wayfinding, Routefinding refers to choosing and traveling a route – from among options – to reach your destination. In a mall or the backcountry, your bearing might have you travel in the 90o or 3:00 direction. The terrain, however, requires you to move off that straight line re-locate and re-confirm positions as you go – to zig-zag concourses and go up or down floors. To hike around a ravine too steep to descend, to find water or shelter, even to correct a navigation error.
At work, routefinding involves all the who, what, where, when, how, why needed to accomplish your objective. A customer need emerges, a team member challenges the plan, a deadline moves, leadership changes. Your destination might remain, but your route moves.
